5 Ways to See The World For Free

Save up to 50% when booking trips to Italy with Booking.com

Most of us have a desire to travel the world and to experience other cultures. It’s a way to broaden our minds, develop a wider and greater appreciation of the world around us (as well as cultures different to our own), and it gives us a sense of excitement and adventure.

However, travel- whether you want to explore Europe or exotic, faraway lands- is something some of us can only dream of due to the extortionate costs involved. Plane tickets, accommodation and food are just a few of the expenses we need to fork out for.

Luckily, there are a handful of ways we can experience the world for free (or for very little cost) and sometimes, even get paid for doing so!

Become an au pair

Popular with those undertaking a gap year, working for a family abroad is a perfect way to see the world through the eyes of a local family (and often get a salary). It’s a great way to experience a new culture, learn a new language and will also give most people a new found sense of independence.

In exchange for your help with a local family, you will receive free accommodation, food and often a salary which is a huge bonus. There are various websites that can help you search for a potential host family such as AuPairWorld and FindAuPair.

Teach English Abroad

If you are a native speaker, teaching English abroad can be extremely fulfilling and rewarding. Undertaking a highly-accredited TEFL (Teaching English as a Foreign Language) course will ensure that you have the correct training for teaching English abroad. 50-hour online courses start from just £179- however, a course isn’t always necessary (but it certainly does help!).

You can teach in China, Thailand, Vietnam… the list goes on! Teaching English is a truly unique opportunity, and one which should not be missed.

Volunteer abroad

Using the site WorkAway, you can advertise to help out in local homes, businesses and farms across over 155 countries in exchange for food and accommodation. Experience the world and learn new skills whilst making a difference to the local communities that you visit.

Help build schools, volunteer with eco-projects, teach surfing, even help with camel-tours!

Get paid to hit the slopes

Ski resorts across the world offer seasonal work for numerous positions, from bartenders to instructors. It’s obviously useful to have prior experience on the slopes, but it’s also a great way to learn how to ski or snowboard for those new to the piste.

Remember though, you are there to work- not just for the apres-ski!

Offer to house-sit

House sitting opportunities are advertised all over the world. Offer your time by watering somebody’s garden or looking after their pets and in return, stay in their house. From a weekend to a few months, this is the perfect opportunity to explore the world, for doing very little work.

Use trusted websites like TrustedHousesitters or MindMyHouse.
