New York

New York certainly doesn’t do New Year’s Eve by halves! With celebrations citywide, the most popular event is in Times Square, where over one million people gather each year to see the ball drop on top of One Times Square. It’s not for everyone, but it’s definitely a once-in-a-lifetime experience!

For a quieter evening but with an equally as magical atmosphere, take a boat ride along New York Harbour for the best view of the midnight firework display on Liberty Island.

Sydney

Sydney is the one of the first major cities to see in the New Year and they certainly celebrate well! There are two incredible world-famous firework displays, a family-orientated display at 9pm and the main event at midnight, which both overlook Sydney Harbour Bridge and Sydney Opera House.

More than a million visitors attend the waterfront show each year, which also features acrobatic performances and the Harbour of Light Parade, an illuminated parade of vessels which is truly enchanting for adults and children alike.

Edinburgh

Hogmanay (which translates to the ‘last day of the year’) welcomes thousands of visitors to the picturesque streets of Edinburgh every year. The three-day celebration is undoubtedly one which everybody must visit at some point!

The world-renowned street party, with traditional dancing, music and celebrations, is unrivalled. The celebrations begin on December 30th with a torchlight procession which illuminates the city. On New Year’s Eve, there is a street party, concerts and a popular Ceilidh right under the castle. On New Year’s Day, many brave the cold waters of the River Forth to welcome in the New Year in an event called ‘Loony Dook’ - definitely not for the faint-hearted!
