What to Do:

The country’s capital, Copenhagen, boasts new Nordic cuisine, Danish design, beautiful sights and the best nightlife, shopping, hotels and much more. It may be expensive, but worth every penny.

As well as showcasing thousands of years of history, the museums in the city are a treat for both art and culture lovers alike. Denmark’s National Museum, which is the largest museum of cultural history in the country, houses an extraordinary collection of Classical, Eastern and Danish artefacts. Both strange and wonderful things can be learnt here, that you won’t hear anywhere else!

Copenhagen’s old harbour, Nyhavn, is brimming with tasteful restaurants and cosy cafes, all situated within colourful townhouses dating from the 18th century. We’d recommend taking a seat on the quayside and take in the atmosphere, music and food, for a truly enjoyable experience. The area can be a tourist trap, though, so make sure you get there early if possible!

Away from the capital, Christiansborg Palace, the Seat of Danish Parliament, Supreme Court and the Ministry of State, is a must-visit. The imposing palace is great for those interested in art, architecture and history.

If you’re looking for an adrenaline-packed break, Djurs Summer Park ticks all the boxes! It’s one of the largest and most exciting amusement parks in Europe, with eight themed areas and more than 60 rides for all ages.

Where to Eat:

With a number of high-end restaurants boasting Michelin stars, the country’s gastronomy scene is incredibly varied and there’s something to satisfy all appetites.

Copenhagen is home to one of the world’s best restaurants with a passion for flavour, Noma. With a menu dependent on the season and two Michelin stars, expect a meal like no other. It’s not cheap at a staggering 1700DDK, or £201, per person.

Meyer’s Deli, also in Copenhagen, is a great spot for Scandinavian specialities, including salted cod with beetroot tartar and scallops with crispy celery.

The city is famous for its smørrebrød, which is a traditional open-sandwich topped with a variety of options, veggie options, fish, pate or meat. Restaurant Kronborg, in the centre of the city, offers delicious smørrebrød in a cosy, relaxed atmosphere.

Where to Drink:

Copenhagen has a vibrant nightlife - clubs, cocktail bars, wine bars and bodegas are incredibly popular with tourists and locals.

Bodegas are traditional Danish pubs with cheaper drinks than trendier counterparts. Bo-Bi Bar, which has been serving since the First World War, is completely different to anything else in Copenhagen. Although small, it’s incredibly easy to feel right at home.

For something a little stronger, Balderdash serves delicious, inventive cocktails in a renovated building that dates from the 18th century.

Aarhus, the country’s second largest city, is home to plenty of bars and cafes. In the cool Latin Quarter, you can expect a Nordic coffee experience like no other. With beans roasted on site, it’s an authentic, yet fashionable place which is always packed! Their food is excellent, too.

Where to Stay:

In Copenhagen, it can be difficult to find affordable accommodation. Urban House, which is part hostel, part hotel, is stylish and well-designed. There are a number of amenities onsite, including a bar and tattoo studio. Doubles from £100 per night.

If you’re visiting, Villa Provence is charming, centrally-located boutique hotel with a warm atmosphere and elegant rooms. Doubles from £150 per night.
