Lake District

There is probably a greater variety of things to do and places to see in the Lake District than anywhere else in the country. It’s also one of the most tranquil spots in the world - it’s absolutely perfect for indulging in some down time.

Luckily for us, it’s only a short drive away, so perfect for a weekend escape. If you’re further afield, the area is easy to reach by public transport. Carlisle Airport has recently reopened making the area even more accessible to those who may never have considered visiting.

Hike, climb, cycle, fish, sail - you name it, it’s all possible in the Lake District. Come rain or shine, it has plenty to offer for adventure seekers.

If you’re a keen photographer, there isn’t a better backdrop than the Lake District. Endless picturesque landscapes, bountiful wildlife, mesmerising lakes and rocky mountains make for the perfect shot, regardless if you’re a pro or not.

As well as being a haven for outdoor lovers, it’s also popular with foodies. Lake Road Kitchen in Ambleside which recently scooped Sustainable Restaurant of the Year, is a must visit. Serving up a hyper-seasonal menu, it serves only the best meat, fish and shellfish as well as homegrown and wild Cumbrian produce.

Newcastle

Newcastle is one of the best places in the UK to eat, drink and play - so naturally, it’s a great place to spend the weekend.

By day, the city offers masses of culture. The Great North Museum: Hancock is a popular family destination, offering ever-changing exhibitions and talks, as well as interactive activities. Exciting exhibits including Fossil Stories and Living Planet are sure to provide an insightful visit.

As the sun sets, the city is renowned for its nightlife and visitors are guaranteed to have a night out like no other! Expect friendly locals, a huge number of bars and clubs, as well as affordable drinks.

The Bigg Market is a bustling area at the heart of the city centre. With more than 20 bars and pubs only a short walk from one another, you won’t go thirsty. Close by is the Quayside, which is also full of trendy bars, cosy pubs and a huge choice of restaurants, many with outside seating areas with impressive views over the River Tyne.

By the River Brew Co. is an independent container community nestled under the iconic Tyne Bridge. Enjoy a cool craft beer and some tasty food as well as get the chance to sample the delights of their vibrant Hawker Market which hosts the finest selection of street food.
